thirty-four

Roscoe didn’t know how long he’d been out for, nor did he know which way was up and if he was dead or not.

The last thing he remembered was Maggie calling him a lunatic just as the Range Rover landed on top of the BAE Caiman APC. After that, everything was a blur, but he was positive they had won.

Eyes fluttering open, he groaned and looked around. He couldn’t see much, which wasn’t that big a worry. The pain shooting up his left side and across his head though, that was concerning, and moving his legs, he groaned.

Instinctively, Roscoe lifted his head and smacked it against something hard.

That did the trick, and his eyes focused on his surroundings. Moving slowly, he saw that he was still inside the Range Rover. More than that, he could tell that it was upside down and he was lying on the roof. With that mystery solved, he focused on the next one.

What happened to Maggie?

She wasn’t in the car, that much he could see and Roscoe hoped she hadn’t been crushed or thrown during the crash. Those thoughts popped into his head and was quickly replaced with a more dreadful one.

What if she’d been thrown and Stonehearst had grabbed her?

You’ve got to find her. Now.

With that objective in mind, Roscoe tilted his head forward and then back. The driver’s side door was crushed. He could see metal protruding from it and knew that was from the armored truck.

Looking up, he saw the passenger side door was wide open, and he blinked. How had he not noticed that before?

He could see sunlight and instinctively pulled himself towards it. Gripping anything he could, Roscoe winced and grunted from the exertion. It didn’t matter what injuries he had. He had to find Maggie.

His head cleared the wrecked car, and he gasped, taking in the fresh air like he was a newborn. The sun was blinding and he closed his eyes without realizing it.

“Maggie,” he said, coughing as he dragged himself forward. “Maggie, you there?”

When no answer came, Roscoe opened his eyes and gasped. The sight before him was awe-inspiring, just on a destructive level.

It looked like a bomb had gone off, which, in a way, one had. The ground was cut up, deep gouges dotted the landscape, and he knew it was from the crash. There were pieces of metal flung about, some were buried in the dirt and still smoked. Then, he saw the dead bodies.

The corpses were nothing but bloody smears and pulpy messes and he wondered how many were from Stonehearst and how many were bystanders?

Don’t think like that.

Maggie was still out there, and he had to find her before Barlowe and his men did. There was no knowing what he’d do to her just to draw Roscoe out.

Time was of the essence, and to speed things up, Roscoe kicked.

His foot connected with the passenger’s seat, and the vehicle groaned. Hearing it, Roscoe rolled onto his back and stared at the wreck.

Eyes widening, he saw it was wobbling now, and he shimmied as fast as he could.
